The World of Overwatch

The complete story of Overwatch — from the Omnic Crisis to the present day.

1. The Omnic Crisis

Decades before the present day, humanity created omniums — massive automated factories designed to produce robots called omnics. These facilities, built by the Omnica Corporation, were intended to drive an economic golden age. For a time, they did — omnics integrated into every facet of human life as workers, servants, and companions.

Then the omniums went rogue. Without warning, factories around the world began producing militarized omnics — legions of hostile machines that turned against their creators. The Omnic Crisis had begun. Conventional militaries were overwhelmed. Nations fell. The world stood on the brink of extinction.

No single country could defeat the omnic threat alone. The United Nations formed a special international task force, bringing together the best soldiers, scientists, strategists, and adventurers from around the world. This team would become known as Overwatch.

2. Founding of Overwatch

The original Overwatch strike team was small but legendary. Jack Morrison (Soldier: 76) and Gabriel Reyes (Reaper) co-led the team. Reyes, a decorated soldier from the US military's enhanced soldier program, was the original commander. Morrison was his second-in-command.

Other founding members included Reinhardt Wilhelm, a Crusader knight from Germany; Torbjorn Lindholm, a brilliant Swedish engineer; Ana Amari, the world's greatest sniper from Egypt; and Liao, a mysterious figure whose contributions remain classified.

Together, they turned the tide of the Omnic Crisis. Their victories made them heroes. When the Crisis ended, the United Nations appointed Jack Morrison as Overwatch's first official Strike Commander — a decision that planted the seeds of resentment in Gabriel Reyes, who believed the role should have been his.

3. The Golden Age

After the Omnic Crisis, Overwatch grew from a military strike team into a global peacekeeping organization. For decades, they maintained order, mediated conflicts, and advanced science and technology. It was an era of hope — Overwatch was beloved by the public and staffed by the best and brightest.

New heroes joined the ranks: Angela Ziegler (Mercy), a prodigious Swiss doctor who developed nanobiotic healing technology. Winston, a genetically engineered gorilla from the Horizon Lunar Colony. Lena Oxton (Tracer), a British pilot who became unstuck in time after a teleportation experiment went wrong, saved by Winston's chronal accelerator.

But beneath the surface, darkness grew. Gabriel Reyes led Blackwatch — Overwatch's covert operations division. Blackwatch carried out assassinations, espionage, and morally questionable missions that the public never knew about. Reyes recruited agents like Genji Shimada, Cassidy, and Moira O'Deorain.

Corruption, internal conflicts, and a series of scandals began to erode public trust. The organization that saved the world was tearing itself apart from within.

4. The Fall of Overwatch

The tensions between Morrison and Reyes reached a breaking point. Accusations of corruption, a UN investigation, and growing public distrust culminated in a catastrophic event: Overwatch's Swiss headquarters was destroyed in a massive explosion. Both Morrison and Reyes were presumed dead.

In the aftermath, the United Nations passed the Petras Act, which officially disbanded Overwatch and made any Overwatch activity illegal. Agents scattered. Some retired peacefully. Others went underground. The world's greatest heroes vanished overnight.

But Morrison and Reyes survived. Morrison became Soldier: 76, a masked vigilante hunting down those who destroyed Overwatch. Reyes, transformed by Moira's experiments into a wraith-like being, became Reaper — and joined the terrorist organization Talon.

Ana Amari, believed killed by Widowmaker, survived in hiding. The world entered a new era of instability — without Overwatch, threats multiplied unchecked.

5. The Recall

Years after the disbandment, Winston — now living alone at Watchpoint: Gibraltar — watched the world descend into chaos. Talon grew bolder. A second Omnic Crisis brewed in Russia. Crime syndicates expanded unchecked. The world needed heroes again.

After Talon agents Reaper and Widowmaker attacked his laboratory to steal the Overwatch agent database, Winston made a decision that changed everything: he triggered the Overwatch Recall, sending a signal to every former agent across the globe, asking them to return.

It was illegal. It was dangerous. But one by one, they answered the call. Tracer was the first. Then Reinhardt, who had been wandering Europe like a knight errant with his squire Brigitte. Mercy returned to heal. Mei emerged from cryogenic sleep in Antarctica. A new generation of heroes joined alongside the old guard — and Overwatch was reborn.

6. The Null Sector Invasion

Null Sector, a radical omnic faction led by Ramattra, launched a coordinated global invasion. Unlike the original Omnic Crisis, Null Sector's attacks were strategic and devastating — striking multiple major cities simultaneously including Toronto, Lisbon, Gothenburg, and more.

Ramattra, once a peaceful omnic monk alongside Zenyatta in the Shambali monastery, had become radicalized by decades of watching omnics suffer discrimination and violence. He believed coexistence was impossible and that omnics would only be safe through force.

The reformed Overwatch fought to defend cities around the world, forging new alliances and confronting old enemies. The invasion forced former adversaries to work together and tested the bonds of the newly reformed team. The fight against Null Sector became the defining conflict of the new Overwatch era.

7. Factions & Organizations

Overwatch

International peacekeeping organization

Founded to end the Omnic Crisis, Overwatch became the world's greatest force for good. After being disbanded by the Petras Act, it was illegally reformed by Winston's Recall. Key members: Soldier: 76, Ana, Reinhardt, Tracer, Winston, Mercy, Torbjorn, Genji, Echo.

Talon

Terrorist organization seeking global conflict

A shadowy terrorist organization that thrives on chaos and conflict. Talon seeks to reshape the world through war, believing that humanity grows stronger through struggle. They were instrumental in Overwatch's downfall. Key agents: Reaper, Widowmaker, Sombra, Doomfist, Moira, Sigma.

Null Sector

Radical omnic liberation army

An extremist omnic faction that fights for omnic rights through military force. Led by Ramattra, they believe peaceful coexistence is impossible after decades of omnic oppression. They launched a devastating global invasion that forced Overwatch to reform.

Blackwatch

Overwatch's covert operations division (disbanded)

The secret black ops arm of Overwatch, led by Gabriel Reyes. Blackwatch conducted assassinations, espionage, and morally gray operations. Its exposure contributed to Overwatch's fall. Former members: Reyes (Reaper), Cassidy, Genji, Moira.

Vishkar Corporation

Hard-light technology megacorporation

An Indian corporation that develops hard-light technology capable of creating physical objects from light. They claim to build utopian cities, but their methods are authoritarian — displacing communities and enforcing strict order. Symmetra is their top architect, though she increasingly questions their motives.

Shimada Clan

Japanese crime family

A powerful Japanese criminal empire that dealt in arms, assassination, and illegal trade. Genji and Hanzo are sons of the clan's master. After their father's death, the clan elders ordered Hanzo to kill Genji for refusing to participate in their criminal activities. Genji survived, rebuilt by Mercy, and Hanzo left the clan in shame.

Junkers

Irradiated wasteland society in Australia

After the Australian omnium was destroyed, the outback became an irradiated wasteland. The survivors formed Junkertown — a lawless society ruled by the Junker Queen, built around scavenging and gladiatorial combat. Junkrat and Roadhog are notorious Junker criminals. The Junker Queen rules from her throne in the scrapyard arena.

The Shambali

Omnic spiritual order in Nepal

A monastery of omnic monks in Nepal who believe that omnics possess souls and seek spiritual enlightenment alongside humans. Founded by Tekhartha Mondatta, who was assassinated by Widowmaker. Zenyatta is a wandering Shambali monk. Ramattra was once a Shambali before becoming radicalized and founding Null Sector.
